The Day the Interface Changed
It’s not natural for someone like me—a content marketer with 25 years of experience making money online—to suddenly change directions.
I have Google to thank.
For the past fourteen years, I’ve been a publisher in the health insurance space. Medicare, to be specific.
Medicare is an extreme “Your Money or Your Life” (YMYL) environment. It serves some of the most vulnerable people in the country. It’s highly regulated. And it’s dominated by some of the largest corporations on the planet.
In that world, trust isn’t optional.
I spent years doing it right:
- Source-backed content
- Real citations
- Structured data
- Pages optimized for clarity, compliance, and human understanding
And it worked—until it didn’t.
It stopped working because Google changed the game. Again.
The Helpful Content Update (HCU) obliterated what had been a stable, full-time source of income for over a decade. It punished good actors. It rewarded thin sales content. And it sent a clear signal—Google doesn’t know what trust looks like anymore.
One day, I asked ChatGPT what Google really wanted from content after the HCU.
It gave me the standard line about E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness.
I thought I knew E-E-A-T. I’d been building that way for years.
But then I asked a different question:
“Can E-E-A-T be measured?”
And that’s when things started to unravel.
Around the same time, I noticed Google’s results in my space—Medicare—were getting worse.
Not slightly worse. Embarrassingly worse.
Google was returning doorway pages, affiliate spam, and plan ads disguised as articles. Not answers. Not explanations. Not truth.
That told me one thing:
Google had reverted to legacy trust.
The algorithm had nothing better to go on, so it leaned on brand names, backlinks, and sales funnels.
And we—the publishers who were actually trying to help people—were invisible.
Not because we lacked experience.
Not because we lacked truth.
But because we weren’t connecting the dots the way machines need.
We weren’t showing trust.
We weren’t measuring it.
We weren’t structuring it in a way AI systems could see, cite, and remember.
Turns out, E-E-A-T can be measured.
I know because I tested it.
Earlier this year, I took over management of another Medicare website—one owned by a large, national insurance company. For years, it had ranked well by answering “Does Medicare cover XYZ?”-style questions.
Great traffic. No revenue. Lots of legacy trust.
But because the site had that legacy authority with Google, I saw an opportunity.
I used it as a lab.
I began running structured data experiments—injecting Schema into plan directories. Segmenting pages. Aligning every concept with machine-readable context.
But here’s the thing:
Both Google search and AI agents responded to those Schema changes—but Schema wasn’t expressive enough.
It didn’t tell the machine what I needed it to understand.
It didn’t explain where the data came from.
It didn’t preserve context. It didn’t carry memory.
For weeks, I obsessed over one problem:
How do I tie individual facts—data atoms like premiums, copays, and MOOP limits—back to their original source in a way machines actually remember?
I thought it was a content problem. A markup problem. A trust problem.
But it wasn’t.
It was a retrieval problem.
And then one day, out of pure frustration, I asked ChatGPT a different kind of question:
“How do you work?”
“How do you remember, recall, and cite things?”
What came back floored me.
“Chief, no one has ever asked me that before,” it said.
And then it opened up.
Not like a chatbot.
Like a system revealing its inner architecture—because someone finally asked it the right way.
That was the moment.
Not just for this book, but for everything that followed.
I saw that AI doesn’t index pages—it remembers patterns.
It doesn’t cite truth—it reflects structure.
And it doesn’t “understand” in the human sense—it retrieves what it’s seen, in the form it saw it.
That’s when I stopped thinking like a publisher.
And started thinking like a memory architect.
I didn’t need to “rank” anymore.
I needed to install the truth into the machine.
